Dermatology Residency Program

Overview

In keeping with the HonorHealth mission to improve the health and well-being of those we serve, our program provides each trainee the educational and practical experience to allow demonstrable expert clinical competency in the care of adult and pediatric diseases of the skin and its appendages in a professional learning environment of scholarship and cooperation. Education, in conjunction with excellent patient care, is the primary purpose of the program. Upon graduation from the training program, residents will be able to deliver superior specialized care to patients with a variety of dermatological conditions, including diseases of the skin, hair, nails, and mucous membranes. The focus of the residency is to provide the right mix of complex medical dermatology education, procedural competency with a strong focus on well-being.

The residents rotate at the Carl T. Hayden Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center located in Central Phoenix serves veterans from the greater Phoenix area. Led by Christopher Reardon, PhD, MD (Program Director) and Reem Haddad, MD (Associate Program Director), the VA experience is central to resident outpatient and inpatient education experiences. Residents also rotate at Saguaro Dermatology Associates.  Led by Dathan Hamann MD (Associate Program Director) and Carsten R. Hamann MD PhD (Director of Research), the Saguaro Dermatology clinics specialize in complex medical dermatology, specifically inflammatory skin disease and contact dermatitis. Residents also rotate with Rajiv Kwatra Dermatology led by Rajiv Kwatra, MD (Director of Surgery). The surgery offers exposure to Mohs, flaps and grafts. Other rotations include dermatopathology/oncology, pediatric dermatology at Phoenix Children’s Hospital and elective rotations. In addition, we do community outreach by having residents volunteer to provide dermatological care at Saint Vincent de Paul Clinics.

Applying to the dermatology program

Selection

The program participates in the National Residency Match Program (NRMP) and only accepts applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). The program recruits for two advance match positions per year and is enrolled in the Joint A/P track match process for preliminary positions with HonorHealth’s Internal Medicine Residency Program. This track was established to give candidates the opportunity to simultaneously match for all 4 years of training at HonorHealth. To be considered for an interview, your application must be completed in ERAS prior to Nov. 15.

We follow the guidelines per the Association of Professors of Dermatology on the release of interview invites. Our program will be interviewing in January 2024 and will be following the second set of release date on November 20th, 2023.
