Acupuncture

If you're going through cancer treatment, you might be experiencing some side effects or discomfort.

At the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center, we can refer you to acupuncture specialists to help you get some relief. Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to maintain health and relieve symptoms. Acupuncture has few side effects and can safely be used as a complement to conventional cancer treatments.

The acupuncture practitioner works to treat imbalances in the body's Qi, or vital energy, by inserting fine, sterile needles at specific acupoints. In many cancer cases, it's recommended as a way to soothe and reduce side effects.

Effectiveness of Acupuncture

According to the National Institutes of Health, acupuncture is effective in relieving:

  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Dry mouth, night sweats and hot flashes.
  • Stress, anxiety and fatigue.
  • Post-surgical pain.

In clinical trials, acupuncture has been proven to relieve nausea and vomiting, including vomiting brought on chemotherapy, surgery and morning sickness. In other studies it has increased white blood cell counts and improved the immune system of cancer patients.
