Women are the gatekeepers of wellness for our families, yet we tend to forget about taking care of ourselves during each stage of our lives.
At this point we’ve survived puberty, we have come to terms with our post-pregnancy bodies, and now we are trying to understand how to manage our health so we age gracefully and vibrantly.
Here are some helpful tips for aging women to consider:
Happier is Healthier: Women have a much harder time taking emotional time for themselves. Humans are social by nature and maintaining healthy social relationships are key to being happier. Don’t forget to pamper yourself with “me time.” A massage, a walk, yoga and meditation are all great ways to keep our emotional health in good shape.
Get Active: Any attempt to move your body contributes to your overall health. Work up slowly to 30 – 60 minutes of walking or other exercise daily. Staying active significantly reduces your risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and depression.
Watch Weight: It’s harder to drop the pounds as we get older. The best advice is to take the focus off the scale and onto healthier eating habits and daily exercise. Whether you see the numbers drop or not, you will be on your way to a significantly healthier lifestyle.
Take Care of Your Teeth: Flossing is one the key ways to prevent heart disease. Remember to brush at least twice a day, and schedule those routine cleanings with your dentist.
Advocate for Your Health: Take charge of your health and establish a relationship with your primary care physician. Together you can manage your unique health plans, monitor your vital signs on a regular basis and easily identify any changes along the way. When you take an active role in your health, you will age gracefully!
