National Women Physicians Day, celebrated Feb. 3, commemorates the birthday of Elizabeth Blackwell, MD, who in 1849 became the first woman to receive a medical degree in the U.S. Today, women make up 38% of practicing physicians nationwide and 52% of medical students.
HonorHealth marked the day with special lunches at all medical centers and an inspiring workshop held at the Bob Bové Neuroscience Institute.
Professional development and impact
The HonorHealth Women Physicians Leadership Council (WPLC) hosted Sharon Kiely, MD, an executive life coach and former chief medical officer, for a session titled “The Power to Navigate Crucial Conversations: Executive Coaching & Negotiation Mastery.” Attendees received a workbook to help master the art of the "winning pitch" while enjoying a delicious dinner and macarons. Each physician was also gifted a rose upon arrival.
Building a stronger HonorHealth
The celebration highlighted how our women physicians strengthen our network through leadership and a commitment to excellence. The WPLC, co-directed by Julie Crichton, MD, and Claire Bowey, MD, continues to create opportunities for mentorship throughout the year.
A special guest: Mia the therapy dog
No celebration is complete without a few tail wags. Mia, a local therapy dog, stole the show at the WPLC event, sporting her best floral dress for the occasion. She even stopped for a photo op with HonorHealth CEO Todd LaPorte. Mia’s presence was a wonderful reminder of the importance of wellness and the joy that animal-assisted therapy brings to our community.
