Five body-saving habits for a better workday

Ever leave work feeling drained, achy or like your body just ran a marathon? It doesn’t have to feel that way. “Making these five simple adjustments can protect your body, boost your energy and make your workday a whole lot more comfortable” says Rashad Saeed, DO, medical director of HonorHealth Occupational Medicine and Employee Health.

1. Stand up for yourself

You’ve heard “sit up straight” a million times, right? Boring. The real key is movement, not perfect posture. Even standing, stretching or walking for a few minutes every hour can reduce back strain and boost circulation, leaving you less stiff and more energized.

Try a sit-stand desk, pace during phone calls or set a timer for minibreaks. Small moves mean a huge difference in how your body feels by the end of the day.

2. Lift smart, not heavy

If your job involves lifting or carrying, don’t just rely on raw strength. Keep objects close, bend at the knees and avoid twisting while lifting. These small adjustments protect your back and joints, so you feel stronger and less sore after your shift. Think of it as a life hack for your body.

3. Hands-on health

Typing, tools or repetitive motions can leave your hands and wrists sore. Protect them by using ergonomic tools, taking microbreaks and alternating tasks.

“These small tweaks really add up,” Dr. Saeed says. “Your hands might even start forgiving you for all those late-night emails.”

With just a few smart changes, your hands can stay comfortable, letting you focus on work – not the pain.

4. Put your best foot forward

If you’re standing all day, your feet and legs may think they’re doing a marathon. Keep them happy with supportive shoes, anti-fatigue mats and quick stretches every hour.

Happy feet mean better posture, more comfort and a workday that doesn’t wear you down.

5. Tune into your space

Even small things in your environment can make a big difference. Adjust lighting to reduce eye strain, organize your workspace to avoid awkward reaches, and make sure temperature and airflow are comfortable.

When your workspace supports your body, every task feels easier.

Little changes, big relief

Here’s the secret: it’s not about working harder, it’s about making work easier for you. Tiny tweaks to how you move, lift and set up your space can protect your body and help you finish your day feeling energized, not exhausted.

“Think of it as hacking your workday for your body,” Dr. Saeed says. “You’ll finish the day feeling better instead of worn out.”
