This one simple switch could save your gut

Wake up. Brew coffee. Repeat. If your morning routine runs on autopilot, you’re not alone.

But what if the secret to feeling better isn’t more coffee — it’s what you do right before it? According to two HonorHealth gut health experts, one simple shift could set the stage for a smarter day.

A wake-up call

The secret? A large glass of water. Deepa Shah, MD, gastroenterologist at HonorHealth Gastroenterology - Osborn suggests drinking 16 ounces of water after waking, then waiting 30 minutes before your first jolt of java.

“When we sleep, we naturally lose fluids,” she explains. “Starting the day with water helps rehydrate the body and prepare the stomach before introducing coffee.”

The “water before coffee” health hack isn’t backed by mountains of research yet. But staying hydrated is still critical, especially here in Arizona where mild dehydration is common.

Smooth move, coffee lovers

In moderation, coffee also supports digestion and can keep you regular. “For people who struggle with constipation, this can be a reasonable and helpful habit,” says Abdul Nadir, MD, gastroenterologist at HonorHealth Gastroenterology - East Mesa. Some studies even suggest it may help restore the natural movement of your digestive tract after surgery.

“Coffee can stimulate bile production, support the gut microbiome and help promote bowel movements,” adds Dr. Shah. “It also contains antioxidants, which may help reduce inflammation.”

The key? Moderation. Too much coffee can trigger acid reflux or diarrhea, especially if you’re sensitive to caffeine. Follow these pro tips to limit any drawbacks:

  • Stick to three cups or less per day
  • Try it black or lightly sweetened — skip sugary, watered-down lattes
  • If coffee bothers your stomach, explore low-acid options or cold brew

Why caring for your gut matters

Your digestive system does more than just process your breakfast. “Gut health plays a major role in your overall well-being,” says Dr. Shah. “It helps regulate digestion and inflammation and is closely connected to the gut-brain axis.”

The gut produces and regulates neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, which can affect mood and sleep. So, when you experience bloating, constipation and other GI discomfort, it can have a serious impact on your day.

“When digestion is functioning well, people tend to feel better,” says Dr. Nadir. “When it’s not, it can impact both physical comfort and quality of life.” If drinking water before your morning cuppa helps improve digestion even a small amount, it’s worth doing.

Small wins, big difference

Scrapping your a.m. routine and starting from scratch can feel overwhelming. Instead, our experts recommend baby steps. “Trying small, sustainable changes is often the most effective approach,” notes Dr. Shah.

So, tomorrow morning, drink a glass of water before you hit the button on your espresso machine. Your gut will thank you for it.
