Three delicious summertime smoothies

With summer fast approaching and temperatures rising, we have three simple and refreshing smoothie recipes to try to keep you cool all season long, courtesy of Blue Zones*. 

Banana/pineapple smoothie

A delightful blend of banana and pineapple, providing you with extra services of fruit for the day.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of soy milk
  • One carton of soy yogurt
  • One banana
  • 1/4 cup of pineapple or 1 ring or several chunks
  • Orange juice (optional)

Preparation

  1. Place in blender.
  2. Puree for about 30 seconds.
  3. Serve and enjoy.

Yield: Two servings.

Healthy living smoothie recipe

Sunrise smoothie

A layered, tropical twist on breakfast chock full of delicious fruits and vitamins.

Ingredients

For mango-pineapple layer:

  • 1/2 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • 1/2 cup frozen pineapple
  • 1/2 cup frozen mango
  • 1/4 cup coconut yogurt

For strawberry-banana layer:

  • 1/2 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • 1/2 cup frozen strawberries
  • One frozen large banana
  • 1/4 cup coconut yogurt
  • Shredded coconut, for garnish (optional)

Preparation

  1. Combine all mango and pineapple ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.
  2. Pour into two glasses and place in the freezer.
  3. Rinse out blender and combine all strawberry-banana ingredients in the blender and blend until smooth.
  4. Pour on top mango and pineapple mixture and top with shredded coconut, if desired.

Note: Sub almond yogurt or soy yogurt for the coconut yogurt, if desired.

Yield: Two servings.

Approximate nutritional value per serving: 222 calories, 2.5 grams protein, 5.3 grams fat, 5.2 grams fiber, 30.9 grams sugar, 87.5 milligrams sodium

Green smoothie

Get your greens in as well as a boost of nutrients, vitamins and energy to help jumpstart your day.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups spinach
  • 3 cups unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 cup frozen mango chunks
  • 1 cup pineapple, cubed
  • Half of an avocado

Preparation

  1. Combine all ingredients in a blender.
  2. Blend until smooth.

Yield: Three servings.

Approximate nutritional value per serving: 164 calories, 6 grams fat, 145 milligrams sodium, 5 grams fiber, 2 grams protein
