Shanyn Lancaster, MD, CAQSM, FAAFP is a board-certified family medicine and sports medicine physician with specialized expertise in caring for female athletes across all competitive levels. She brings extensive experience from her role as Medical Director for USA Gymnastics and team physician for USA Swimming, having most recently served at the 2025 World Championships in Singapore. Dr. Lancaster earned her medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine, completed her family medicine residency at Columbia St. Mary's/Medical College of Wisconsin and pursued fellowship training in primary care sports medicine at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.
Dr. Lancaster provides comprehensive sports medicine care with particular clinical interests in female athletes, gymnasts, dancers and cheerleaders. She offers specialized evaluation and treatment for conditions affecting active individuals, including female athlete triad, bone density concerns, osteoporosis and stress fractures. Her expertise encompasses non-operative management with advanced injection therapies tailored to each patient's activity level and performance goals. Dr. Lancaster's clinical approach spans the full spectrum of athletic care, from recreational athletes seeking to stay active to collegiate competitors and elite Olympic-level athletes with highly specialized needs.
Dr. Lancaster's approach to sports medicine care centers on blending education, lived experience and genuine human connection to empower patients in their health journey. She prioritizes clear, practical education so patients understand not just their diagnosis but how to take ownership of their health in a way that fits their lives. Her background as a collegiate gymnast and Big Ten champion shapes how she thinks about the body, performance and recovery, allowing her to understand firsthand the physical and mental demands placed on individuals striving for excellence as well as the mindset required to overcome setbacks. She strives to meet patients where they are, listen without judgment and build trust that allows for honest, collaborative care. Originally from Detroit, Michigan, Dr. Lancaster served as former head team physician for Arizona State University and continues to enjoy sideline coverage. She remains actively involved in elite-level sports medicine as Medical Director for USA Gymnastics and team physician for USA Swimming. In her spare time, she enjoys playing tennis and riding her Peloton, bringing the same dedication to staying active that she encourages in her patients.
