Poor leg circulation? It could be chronic venous insufficiency

Do you have tired, achy legs and swollen ankles? You might assume it’s from standing or sitting too long, but a condition called chronic venous insufficiency could be to blame.

Hasan Aldailami, MD, network director of vascular surgery at HonorHealth Heart Care, explains how poor leg circulation affects your body, what to watch for and the next steps to take.

What is chronic venous insufficiency?

This condition occurs when the veins in the leg are damaged, restricting the return of blood from the legs. Chronic venous insufficiency made headlines when President Trump was diagnosed in July 2025, putting the spotlight on a health issue that affects millions of Americans.

“With early care, this condition is very manageable,” says Dr. Aldailami. “The goal of treatment is to improve circulation and reduce symptoms.”

Signs of a problem

The symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency can vary from mild to more bothersome, including:

  • Achy, heavy-feeling legs
  • Swelling in the legs or ankles
  • Varicose veins
  • Skin discoloration or dryness
  • Leg cramps or a “pins and needles” feeling

Getting back on your feet

While many symptoms can be addressed with lifestyle changes and outpatient treatments, in severe cases, patients can develop skin ulcers and wounds that are more difficult to treat.

That’s why it’s so important to catch it early. “If you notice changes in your legs, especially swelling or visible veins, it’s worth having a conversation with your provider,” says Dr. Aldailami. “People over 70 and those with a family history of vein problems are especially susceptible.”

Chronic venous insufficiency is more common than you might think. Luckily, it’s also very treatable. With the right care, you can find lasting relief from symptoms and get back on your feet again.
