Patients with severe mitral valve disease who have limited treatment options may now have access to a new minimally invasive procedure at HonorHealth.
The Structural Heart Team at HonorHealth Scottsdale Shea Medical Center is offering the FDA-approved SAPIEN M3 transcatheter mitral valve replacement system for certain patients with severe mitral valve disease who are not candidates for traditional surgery.
HonorHealth performed the first procedure in the Phoenix area following FDA approval in April and has since completed 12 cases using the new therapy.
“With this minimally invasive procedure, we can guide a replacement valve to the heart through a vein, without opening the chest,” said Haidar Yassin, MD, an interventional cardiologist and network director for structural heart disease at HonorHealth Heart Care.
The procedure may offer a treatment option for patients whose age, health or other medical conditions make traditional open-heart surgery too risky.
“This therapy gives us another option for patients who may have previously had few choices,” added Mohanad Hasan, MD, interventional cardiologist with HonorHealth Heart Care. “Our goal is to help patients feel better, improve their quality of life and get back to doing the things they enjoy.”
The new procedure builds on the comprehensive services available through HonorHealth Heart Care, including minimally invasive heart procedures. The structural heart team performed approximately 1,700 procedures in 2025, including 450 TAVR procedures and 119 mitral therapies.
