HonorHealth Artificial Heart Program
At HonorHealth, we understand that every heart — and every patient — is unique. Our Artificial Heart Program brings together specialists from across cardiology, surgery and support services to provide advanced, personalized care for adults living with severe heart failure. With leading technology and a team approach, we’re here for you from evaluation through long-term care.
Advanced support for heart failure
As part of our advanced heart failure treatment options, we offer ventricular assist devices (VAD) - mechanical pumps that help circulate blood when the heart can't do it on its own. These devices can serve as a bridge to transplant or as long-term therapy for those who aren't transplant candidates. They reduce the strain on a weakened heart, improving circulation to vital organs.
VADs are used in several ways:
- Bridge-to-heart transplant: For patients waiting for a donor, a VAD provides circulatory support.
- Destination therapy: For those not eligible for a transplant, a VAD serves as a long-term solution, maintaining heart function and quality of life.
- Bridge to recovery: A VAD can temporarily support the heart while it heals from illness or injury.
