Foot and Ankle Conditions
Common ankle injuries and conditions that HonorHealth physicians can help you with include:
- Achilles tendon repair: This is needed when the tendon ruptures.
- Ankle instability: The outer side of the ankle gives way regularly. It typically occurs after multiple ankle sprains.
- Arthritis of the foot and ankle: Pain, swelling and stiffness in and around your ankle and foot due to osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and traumatic arthritis.
- Bunion deformity (Hallux valgus): Enlargement and repositioning of joints at the ball of the foot.
- Cavus foot problems (high arch): When the foot has a higher than usual arch.
- Diabetic foot problems (neuropathic ulcers and fractures): These ulcers are open wounds on the bottom of the foot, most commonly as a result of diabetes. Medical attention is needed immediately to reduce the risk of amputation.
- Fractures and dislocations: Pain, swelling, bruising and inability to walk. A dislocation of the ankle usually involves a fracture.
- Flat foot, acquired and congenital: The arch of the foot makes complete contact with the ground.
- Heel pain (plantar fasciitis): Chronic inflammation typically felt during the first few steps in the morning.
- Lesser toe deformities: Pain and lack of flexibility among the smaller four toes, also known as "hammer toe."
- Limb salvage: If you have malignant tumors, you can benefit from limb salvage. Treating tumors with advanced technologies can prevent limb amputation.
- Lumps and bumps: Localized in an area on the foot that causes swelling and sometimes pain. These can be caused by trauma, infections, inflammatory diseases, benign cysts and tumors and/or cancers.
- Neuropathic conditions: Swelling, pain and sometimes deformity of the limb can occur where the nerve supply to bones in the foot and/or ankle are not normal.
- Overuse injuries: Caused by repetitive stress to the ankle or foot due to work-related tasks, sports or recreation injuries and age.
- Post-polio syndrome: Several problems can occur with feet and ankles if you're affected by post-polio syndrome.
- Post-traumatic/surgical conditions: Conditions that occur after a trauma or surgery such as a deformity to the foot or ankle, tendon ruptures, dislocations, abnormal positioning, or post-traumatic infections.
- Sports injuries: Can include fractures, dislocations, muscle tears, sprains and strains.
- Sprains and strains: Ligaments that give way or tear. They differ from fractures because bones are not broken. Sprains and strains can be caused by the rolling of the ankle, twisting the ankle.
- Tendonitis. Inflammation or irritation of a tendon most commonly caused by repetitive friction on the affected area or from a sudden injury.
