Ankle arthritis: What you’ll wish you knew sooner

When every step’s a struggle, it’s more than your ankle — it’s your whole life on hold. Ankle arthritis can creep in over time or after an old injury, but the pain doesn’t have to win.

So, what can you do? Steven Tocci, DPM, a foot and ankle surgeon with HonorHealth Orthopedics, breaks down what is happening — and you can get back on your feet.

Start with small steps — they go a long way

“Surgery is rarely the first step,” says Dr. Tocci. “In many cases, small changes — like the right brace or shoe insert — can make a big difference in how you move and feel every day.”

There are a number of noninvasive options that may ease your pain and help you move more comfortably, including:

  • Oral anti-inflammatories: Over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen or naproxen can reduce inflammation and relieve discomfort. Just make sure to talk to your provider so you’re using them safely.
  • Cortisone injections: If oral meds aren’t an option, a cortisone injection directly into the joint can provide significant relief — and may help you delay or even avoid surgery.
  • Bracing: Whether it’s a simple support you buy at the drugstore, or a custom brace fitted to your ankle, this added stability can make a big difference in your day-to-day comfort.

The sooner you address it, the more options you have — and the better chance you have at keeping your joint healthy for the long haul.

When it’s time to consider surgery

If conservative treatments are no longer effective, surgical interventions may offer a solution to reduce pain and improve mobility.

“Living with ankle arthritis can be frustrating, but there’s always something we can do to help,” Dr. Tocci adds. “You don’t have to just live with the pain — we’ll walk through your options together.”

Here are two surgical options available:

  • Ankle fusion: This procedure eliminates motion in the joint, which can reduce pain and increase stability. Most people walk comfortably again — often with little or no limp.
  • Ankle replacement: For some, replacing the joint with a prosthetic allows for more movement while preserving the surrounding joints. When it’s the right fit, it can be life changing.

It’s understandable how discouraging it can be to sit out hikes, avoid stairs or feel like you’re slowing down. The good news is you don’t have to live with that pain. Managing arthritis is a process, and while some days may be more challenging than others, each step forward is progress.
