HonorHealth joins national hospital nutrition pledge

HonorHealth has joined more than 250 hospitals nationwide in signing the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Make Hospital Food Healthier Pledge. All nine of our medical centers are taking part in the voluntary initiative, which encourages hospitals to offer more nutritious meals, reduce highly processed foods and sugary beverages, and use healthier cooking methods to support patient recovery and long-term health.

HonorHealth is already making progress toward meeting these goals. Over the past two years, we’ve expanded plant-forward offerings in our cafés, including the fully plant-based Vitality Juice Bar at HonorHealth Scottsdale Shea Medical Center. Additional improvements include more nutritious recipes, air fryers and tools that help people quickly identify better-for-you options. These efforts complement our role as anchor sponsor of Blue Zones Project Scottsdale, which focuses on creating healthier environments that support lifelong well-being.

"Good nutrition is an important part of healing, and we're working to make healthier choices easier and more accessible," said Melissa Schmidt, RD, senior director of Food and Clinical Nutrition Services at HonorHealth. "We've already made meaningful progress across our cafés and patient dining programs, and this pledge gives us another opportunity to build on that work."

HonorHealth will continue enhancing patient menus and nutrition programs,
building on our commitment to support better health during hospital stays and long after patients return home.
