Transitional Year Residency Program

The HonorHealth Transitional Year Residency Program is a newly ACGME-accredited, one-year program designed to provide a comprehensive and supportive experience for residents preparing to enter advanced specialty training. This program offers a broad-based clinical experience that equips graduates with the core knowledge, skills, and professional identity needed to succeed in a wide range of categorical residency programs. Rooted in HonorHealth’s mission to improve the health and well-being of the communities we serve, the program emphasizes patient-centered care, teamwork, and excellence in clinical practice.
Residents rotate through a diverse range of clinical settings, including internal medicine, surgery, emergency medicine, and carefully selected electives. This structure allows residents to tailor their training to align with individual career goals while maintaining a strong grounding in general medical principles. Through direct patient care, participation in interdisciplinary teams, and exposure to a community-based healthcare system, residents develop the clinical confidence and adaptability essential for future specialty training.

The program places strong emphasis on lifelong learning, professionalism, and resident development. Structured educational conferences, faculty mentorship, and opportunities for quality improvement and resident-led teaching foster reflective practice and continuous growth. Residents are supported in developing effective communication skills, ethical decision-making, and a commitment to continuous self-improvement—competencies that are foundational to success throughout their medical careers.

Equally important, the HonorHealth Transitional Year Residency Program is committed to supporting resident well-being and career advancement. Individualized advising and career planning help residents transition smoothly into their chosen specialty programs, while a supportive learning environment promotes resilience, compassion, and work-life balance. Graduates of the program leave well prepared to advance into specialty training with the professionalism, clinical competence, and dedication that reflect the core values of HonorHealth.
