Follow the three Ws when wearing a cloth face mask

  • Wear when you’re in public, especially when you can’t safely distance from others.
  • Putting it on:
    • Wash your hands (or use hand sanitizer) before putting on the cloth mask.
    • Make sure it covers your mouth and nose, and secure it under your chin.
    • Ensure it fits snugly around the side of your face, so you can still breathe easily.
  • Removing it:
    • Untie the strings or stretch the ear loops — handling only by the ties/loops.
    • Fold the outside corners together while pulling away from face.
    • Make sure to avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth during the removal of your mask.
    • Clean your hands after you’re done.
  • When wearing your mask, do not put it around your neck or forehead.

  • Cloth masks should be washed after each use.
  • You can include them in the normal laundry with regular detergent and dry by either lying flat to air dry (direct sunlight is ideal) or in the dryer on the highest heat setting.

Watch your hands

  • While wearing your mask, avoid touching your face and the mask itself. If you do, clean your hands.
  • Avoid tugging on the mask or adjusting it by grabbing the front. If you need to adjust, do so with the borders of the mask, then wash your hands.

Who should NOT use cloth face coverings?

  • Children under age 2.
  • Anyone who has trouble breathing, is unconscious, incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance.
