When you're fighting cancer, you may experience weight loss or have difficulty eating because of your treatment. Unfortunately, these challenges come at a time when proper nutrition is key to maintaining your strength, managing therapy side effects, improving your immune system, speeding your recovery and promoting your overall health and enjoyment of life.
The Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center is proud to be one of only a few programs in the country to offer a board-certified oncology dietitian who will work with you to create an individualized nutrition plan based on your needs and evidence- based research.
Nutrition and Your Recovery
Nutrition is an integral part of cancer therapy and survivorship. Our goal is to improve your overall nutrition, promote healthy eating habits and enhance your well-being and quality of life. Eating well during treatment can help maintain your strength, preserve your body's nutrient stores, manage therapy side effects, improve immune function, speed recovery and promote overall health.
In addition to individual nutritional consultations, you can attend free group classes. Healthy cooking classes taught by local chefs demonstrate simple and delicious recipes that can be prepared easily at home.
You may be a perfect candidate for our Nutritional Counseling Program if you answer "yes" to any of these questions:
- Are you having difficulty eating because of side effects from a cancer treatment?
- Have you experienced unwanted weight loss or gain?
- Would you like to adopt eating habits to reduce risk?
- Do you have questions about supplements?
Physician referral is recommended for individual nutritional counseling. Fees depend on the length and type of consultation required. Insurance coverage varies and will be determined on an individual basis. A financial counselor is available to assist you with evaluating your needs and verification of insurance coverage for services.
