Newborn warning signs

Warning signs may include:

  • Your baby seems listless and/or doesn't seem alert when awake
  • Your baby refuses to eat or doesn't eat in his/her usual way
  • Your baby cries more than normal, or the cry is different than normal
  • Your baby breathes in a different way — slower, faster or more noisily
  • Your baby has a temperature of 100.4 degrees or higher (taken under the arm)
  • Your baby vomits more than once (different than normal spit up)
  • Your baby has fewer wet or dirty diapers
  • Your baby has stools containing mucus, blood or a foul odor
  • Your baby's skin or whites of the eyes appear yellow
  • Your baby just seems sick
